Treatment for MHE is usually a two-step process:
- Removal of osteochondromas
- Osteotomies (surgical bone cuts) to realign bones and joints
Treatment for MHE is highly patient-specific and depends on the location of the osteochondromas and the severity of the resulting deformities. Patients with MHE tend to have a large number of osteochondromas all over their bones. We will only treat and resect the osteochondromas that are bothersome; those that stick out and bump or tether other structures (nerves, blood vessels, muscles, other bones), or those that distort joints or restrict the range of motion. The presence of osteochondromas alone is not an indication for surgery. Osteochondromas are only removed when they result in a deformity.
