Welcome to the Center for Rehabilitation & Physical Therapy at the Paley Institute. Here you will find information on physical therapy protocols, the Rehabilitation Department at the Paley Institute, pain management, videos on the most common therapy stretches, and psychological support programs.
Physical Therapy Protocols
Physical therapy is a critical component of Limb Lengthening and Deformity Correction treatment. Limb lengthening creates special demands and considerations for the patient’s rehabilitation. The goals of therapy are to maintain and increase range-of-motion of joints, promote muscle strengthening, help prevent contractures, and improve strength, mobility, and functional independence.
Rehabilitation at the Paley Institute
We have an on-site physical therapy department here at the Paley Institute that exclusively treats our patients. Dr. Paley or one of his physician’s assistants may recommend physical therapy as part of your treatment plan. The Paley Rehabilitation Department is conveniently located on the west side of the Kimmel Building on St. Mary’s campus, just down the hall from Dr. Paley’s clinic. For all lengthening patients, Dr. Paley requires them to stay in West Palm Beach throughout the lengthening phase and receive daily physical therapy, 5 days per week, at the Paley Institute’s Rehabilitation Department. For any questions or additional information, you can contact the Rehab Department directly at 561.844.7878.
Pain Management Techniques
Physical therapy during lengthening can be physically demanding on the patient and emotionally demanding on their families. Some of these techniques can help ensure a smoother process during therapy with a young child.

The Paley Rehabilitation Department is proud to present a partnership with the Psychology Department at Nova Southeastern University. Nova University offers psychological support to our patients and each month organizes a pizza party where parents and patients of all ages can get together and discuss coping mechanisms during the difficult lengthening process.
