Knee Ligament Injuries
The knee is a complex hinge joint made up of the femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone), ligaments, cartilage, and tendons, all working together to facilitate movement and provide stability. Key ligaments include the medial collateral ligament (MCL), lateral collateral ligament (LCL), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Dr. McVicker, who specializes in the treatment of ligament injuries, offers care at our West Palm Beach and Jupiter locations.
Common Knee Injuries
Knee injuries can result from overuse or sudden trauma during sports, leading to symptoms like pain, swelling, and stiffness. At Paley Institute, we treat a wide range of knee injuries, including:
Types of Ligament Injuries
ACL Tear: Often caused by sudden direction changes, hyperextension, or impact, typical in sports like football and soccer.
MCL Tear: Typically results from stress on the outside of the knee, causing stretching or partial tears of the ligament.
PCL Tear: Although rare, this injury is commonly caused by direct impact, such as in car accidents or falls with a bent knee.
If you hear a popping sound, feel your knee giving way, or experience severe pain and difficulty moving your knee, we encourage you to seek medical evaluation promptly.
