What are Orthotics & Prosthetics?
Orthotics and prosthetics are essential for individuals who have experienced limb loss, congenital limb differences, or conditions that affect mobility. They help those with musculoskeletal or neurological disorders, such as AMC, Clubfoot, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida and Scoliosis. These devices provide support, enhance functionality, and improve the quality of life by restoring movement and comfort, whether it’s for walking, standing, or everyday tasks.

What to expect from your Appointment
As part of your child’s rehabilitation team, the Paley Institute evaluates every child prior to casting and works closely with your physician, physical therapist, or occupational therapist to ensure the device offers maximum benefit.
Evaluations may be scheduled as separate appointments or combined with casting sessions. Please bring a pair of shorts for your child to wear so our orthotist can better observe movement.
A prescription from your physician, including a diagnosis, is required for all casting appointments. Please also provide details of your insurance coverage.
Appointments generally last at least one hour. While we offer a selection of books and toys, we recommend bringing a favorite activity or toy to help keep your child comfortable and entertained during the visit.
Fitting appointments typically take one to two hours. During this visit, we evaluate and adjust the fit of your child’s orthotic device. Most devices are delivered during the same visit, though additional appointments may be required.
Families with private insurance must make full payment before the device can be taken home.

A prescription stating “Adjust Orthotics” is required for all adjustment appointments. The time required for repairs depends on the device and the issue. Please describe the problem when scheduling so we can ensure any needed parts are available.
Children are typically seen six months after delivery to assess the fit and function of the device and to perform any necessary adjustments.
