Rotator Cuff Repair

If you’re experiencing severe shoulder pain and a loss of strength, and you’re eager to return to sports soon, Paley Institute is here to help. Dr. McVicker treats patients at our Jupiter and West Palm Beach locations, and Drs. Lovy, Levy, and Beleckas treat patients at our Boca Raton location, specializing in advanced care for shoulder injuries.

Preparing for Shoulder Surgery

Your doctor will begin by assessing your symptoms and reviewing your medical history. Imaging tests, such as an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan, may be ordered to evaluate the damage. Be sure to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking and whether you have any allergies to medications or anesthesia. Additionally, arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

Surgical Procedure for Rotator Cuff Repair

Rotator cuff surgery is typically performed under general or regional anesthesia. During the procedure:

  • One or more incisions are made near the shoulder joint.
  • An arthroscope is inserted to view the joint.
  • Miniature surgical instruments are used to remove damaged tendon tissue and repair the injured area.
  • The damaged ends of the tendon are sewn back together, with great care taken to avoid injury to nearby nerves or blood vessels.
  • In some cases, a suture anchor is used to reattach a completely torn tendon to the bone.
  • The incision is closed and covered with a bandage.
  • Post-Operative Care

After surgery, you will be prescribed pain medication or NSAIDs to manage pain. Your shoulder will be placed in a brace or cast to limit movement, and specific physical therapy exercises will be introduced as you heal. Most patients can return to normal activities after about 6 months.
