Shoulder Labrum Reconstruction

Dr. Zachary McVicker specializes in the treatment of shoulder labral tears and offers advanced surgical and non-surgical care at our West Palm Beach and Jupiter locations.

Types of Shoulder Labral Tears

The most common labral tears include:

  • SLAP Tear: A tear in the superior portion of the labrum at the attachment of the biceps tendon.
  • Bankart Tear: A tear that leads to recurrent shoulder dislocations and can contribute to arthritis.
  • Posterior Labrum Tear: A rare tear caused by repeated internal impingement, often due to extreme extension and external rotation of the shoulder.
  • Diagnosis of Shoulder Labral Tears

Dr. McVicker will perform a physical examination to assess your range of motion and shoulder stability. Imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans with contrast may be used to detect a labral tear. In some cases, shoulder arthroscopy is necessary to confirm the diagnosis.

    Conservative Treatment Options:

Many labral tears can be treated without surgery. Dr. McVicker may recommend:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Rest and activity modification
  • Physical therapy to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles
  • Steroid injections for persistent pain
  • If symptoms do not improve with conservative measures, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary.

Surgical Treatment of Shoulder Labral Tears

Dr. McVicker specializes in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to repair labral tears. The procedure varies depending on the type of tear:

  • SLAP Tear Repair: If the labrum is torn without biceps tendon involvement, the damaged portion is removed. If the tendon is also affected, sutures or absorbable anchors are used to repair and reattach it.
  • Bankart Repair: This procedure involves reattaching the labrum and capsule to the anterior glenoid cavity using arthroscopic techniques. Small incisions allow the use of an arthroscope and surgical instruments to restore shoulder stability.
