Osteofibrous Dysplasia

Content Area

Osteofibrous dysplasia (OFD) is a rare condition caused by a non-cancerous bone tumor that most commonly affects the tibia (and sometimes the fibula). It is characterized by a weakening of the bone’s cortex, often resulting in fracture, bowing, and nonunion.

The exact cause of OFD is unknown and there is little evidence implicating the development of these tumors to chemicals, radiation, or any particular effect. OFD typically develops in individuals under the age of 20.

Early symptoms of OFD include swelling and pain in the affected area. As the tumor weakens the bone, fractures, bowing of the tibia, and nonunions may occur which require surgical intervention. X-rays are used to visualize the bone structure and the degree of fracture or bowing. A biopsy may also be ordered in order to rule out the possibility of adamantinoma, a cancerous tumor similar to OFD.
